Sanjeev Varma is an independent consultant and advisor who until recently was a Managing Director with TeneoCapital, leading their Global Industrials practice. Mr. Varma has over 32 years of experience in the Automotive and Manufacturing sectors –20 years in Operations and 12 years in Consulting and Investment Banking. Previously Mr. Varma served on the Senior Advisory Board at ChaninCapital Partners / Duff & Phelps Securities, LLC. At Duff & Phelps he advised on M&A transactions and Restructurings. He has advised on numerous auto industry related transactions including Dura, Dana, Delphi, Visteon, Intermet, Neoplan, HayzLemmerz, Hilite, Axeonand others. During the General Motors restructuring, he was industry advisor to VEBA shareholders.
He has provided analysis/evaluation of Engineering & Manufacturing Companies to bond holders, private equity and hedge funds. In his most recent consulting work he advised Mercedes Benz Technology (Germany), MalibuIQ–Hughes Research Lab (California) and Mahindra Automotive (India). Prior to ChaninCapital Partners, Mr. Varma spent several years as a Senior Advisor to the German Government Agency IIC (later merged with ‘Invest-in-Germany’) helping bring companies in the U.S. and India to invest in Germany.
He was also Director of Marketing & Planning for Magna Powertrain, a $3 billion subsidiary of the $24 billion Magna Group. Prior to his work with Magna Powertrain, Mr. Varma worked at New Venture Gear (“NVG”), a $1.6B DaimlerChrysler & General Motors Joint Venture company, where he was involved in its merger with Magna Powertrain. At NVG, he served as the Director of Marketing, Strategic Planning and Asian Sales, where he managed all marketing, strategic planning, and business development activities in NAFTA, Asia and Europe.
During his career he has worked with several global automakers like Ford, GM, Chrysler, VW, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Mitsubishi and many Tier 1 auto parts suppliers. He has visited more than 300 Engineering Design and Manufacturing facilities worldwide. His India experience includes dealing with all major auto makers like Tata, Mahindra and Ashok Leyland. He has visited and worked with many Tier 1 auto suppliers in India.
He was also the head of R&D of New Venture Gear and worked at their Powertrain Manufacturing Facility developing and launching products for General Motors, Chrysler, Ford and other automakers. As an inventor, Sanjeev is listed on six patents, two of which were used in the BMW X5 and Jeep Grand Cherokee. A product that he invented during Graduate School was used by NASA in Space Shuttle flight STS-175. He started his professional working career with Chrysler Corporation in 1984.
Mr. Varma has a BS in Mechanical Engineeringfrom Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in India and a MS in Mechanical Engineering from Syracuse University in the US. He has completed Executive Education Programs in Finance & Marketing at Wharton Business School. He is a FINRA registered representative holding licenses 63, 79 and 82.
